Holiday cards
Nov. 14th, 2010 07:10 pmIt's that time of year again! No, I'm not asking for your addresses yet for my holiday card list, but I am shopping around for that perfect card. I'm always on the lookout for something that really captures our personality as a family, and something that may be a departure from your typical holiday card. I went to Shutterfly.com after receiving a mailer the other day, and wow, they have some really cute designs! I'm going to have a really hard time picking one out this year, there are so many amazing options. Many of them are highly customizable, and can be personalized, not only with text, but with different layouts and numbers of pictures. I love that you can customize them in so many different ways, and I will probably spend hours working on mine! Behind the cut, I've listed some of my favorites. If you click on the picture, it will link you to the design's page.

Doctor update
Feb. 8th, 2008 11:28 amI took Owen to the doctor, and based on what Steve's symptoms were, he thinks Owen might have the flu! I asked Steve if he thought he had the flu, and he said that he had flu-like symptoms, but because he's on allergy meds, it doesn't blow up into the full thing. The pediatrician wrote a prescription for Tamiflu, but I'm hesitant to have it filled, because I'm not totally convinced this is a flu.
What would you do?
Also, isn't there a way to default all your posts to friends only? Could someone tell me how to do it?
ETA: Nevermind, I found out how to set the minimum security level.

Family fun for everyone!
Feb. 8th, 2008 09:00 amSteve came down with a really bad cold earlier this week, and it was only a matter of time before Owen and I got it. I'm doing my best to fight it; so far, I've just got this sore throat. Poor Owen is sick though, for the first time. He was sounding a little snotty and congested last night, so every time he woke up, I put him back down on his side after feeding him. He woke up at 5:30 and wouldn't eat or go back to sleep, so I walked around with him until he fell asleep. It seemed like it was painful for him to lie flat, so I propped some pillows up on my bed and let him sleep on me. Of course, he kept waking up and turning his head everywhere, so I've basically been up since 5:30, which kinda sucks.
I took his temperature when we got up at about 8, and it was 102.3, so he'll be going to the doctor today. I've given him some Tylenol, and right now, he's in his swing watching Baby Einstein. He's actually doing pretty well now, but I want to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection or anything. Poor little man :(.

Okay, I've been trying really hard for the past few weeks to keep up with my friends list, and I'm failing miserably. I've bitten off more than I can chew, so I'm sad to say that I'm going to be making a friends lists cut. Please do not take it personally if I cut you. It's nothing against any of you, because you are all wonderful!
Monday Monday
Feb. 4th, 2008 02:04 pmSteve wasn't feeling too well last night, so he did us both a favor and slept in the guest room last night after failing to fall asleep in our room. He woke up this morning looking like hell, but was determined to go to work because he had to get some stuff done. He could barely walk to the couch, so he had me call his work for him and tell them he was sick.
Not wanting to get sick, Owen and I went to our moms group meetup, where I happened to run into
luvbeingamommy. We all watched a little kids show, and I had lunch with my group. I asked the girl I meantioned last night if she would be interested in painting some pictures for me, and she said yes! I'm totally excited. She said that she paid about $50 to make 2 of hers on a really nice canvas, so I figured I'd pay about that much for each on a less expensive canvas. I'll have to iron out the details, but I'm so happy that she's going to do those for me.

Super Bowl and stuff
Feb. 3rd, 2008 09:43 pmI'm a little bummed that the Patriots lost. I don't actually care for football, but Steve is a big Pats fan, and I was really hoping they'd make it to 19-0. Ah well, life goes on. We had Steve's friend Donovann and his wife over, as well as my brother. It was a nice, small gathering, but Donovann is super loud, louder than Steve, so Owen got spooked a few times.
Speaking of Owen, little man has been cranky the past couple of days. I don't know what's going on with him. His teeth have come through, so I don't think that's it, and he isn't sick or feverish or anything. Maybe he's just having a few bad days. I hope gets past them soon though, because my patience is wearing a little thin.
Last week, at one of the moms group meetups, we went to South Coast Plaza, which is a higher-end mall (Saks, Nordies, and Bloomingdales, but they also have a Sears) to have lunch and walk around. A group of 5 or so of us decided to walk into the Jimmy Choo store with our babies and strollers, and oh my God, it was hilarious. The salesmen just stared at us with these scared smiles on their faces. It was priceless.
One of the girls in my moms group has some artistic talent, and showed me some dinosaurs that she painted onto canvas. Since my bedding set doesn't come with any wall hangings or anything, I'm thinking of commissioning her to paint some for me, based on the dinosaurs in the pattern. I think they would be really cute, but I don't know how much I should offer her for them. I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself because I don't even know if she'd do it.

Toast and traveling
Jan. 31st, 2008 09:29 pmAt what age and/or milestones did you introduce zwieback toast and biter biscuits? On the box, it says not to give it to them until 10 months, but I seem to remember people introducing them earlier than that. I've tried giving him puffs, but he's not interested in the least.
Has anyone ever taken a trip with a baby on a train? We're taking the train to Chicago on our way to the Hockey Hall of Fame in June, and we will probably be getting a roomette. If not, would I have to pay for a seat for Owen to put him in his carseat? Even with a roomette, I don't know how we're going to fit Owen in there, because there is literally room for a bed and nothing more; his Pack 'n Play probably won't fit. I could use some guidance, thanks!

Blink and you'll miss me
Jan. 31st, 2008 08:51 amGoodness, I haven't been around much this week, sorry! Nothing really new or exciting is going on; I just feel like I don't have a lot of time for posting. I usually only get on the computer in the morning while Owen is rolling around on his playmat, and then in the evening after he goes to bed. But this week has been different for some reason. Last night, my dad was here after Steve and my brother's hockey game, because they went out to a bar to have a little team get together.
Owen is being a little pill right now, but I can't blame the kid. He's working on 3 teeth right now. Last week, he just had the one coming through, but two more have decided to join him over the past few days. He went to bed late last night because of the hockey game, at around 9:30, then woke up again at 10:30. After that, he slept straight through until 7 this morning, hooray! However, it's hard enough to get up with him at 8:30 (I know, I'm lucky), so this morning was a little rough. I put him in his swing, put on Baby Einstein, and took a nap on the couch.
Owen is crying for me right now, so I'd better wrap this up. I've gone to two moms' meetups for one group, and I really like them so far. I have my first meeting with the other one today, the one that stood me up. We're going to the Discovery Science Center, so that should be fun.

Did you know?
Jan. 28th, 2008 11:28 amDid you know that I taught myself to read when I was 4 years old? I used to take books out to my dad and asked what sounds the letters made. I used to love reading when I was little. My grandma would take me to the store to buy toys, but I always wanted books. When I was in kindergarten, they sent me to 2nd grade for reading. When I was in 2nd grade, my teacher wouldn't allow me to choose the books I wanted to read; she began picking books for me, and ever since then, I've hated reading. I got into the Babysitters Club books, and read about 10-15 of those, as well as about 7 or 8 Mary Higgins Clark books, but when it came to school, I'd never read the assigned books.
Oddities and pictures
Jan. 28th, 2008 08:53 am* The other day, as we all headed down to my parents' house, I saw a car driving with a foot-deep pile of snow on the roof. Mind you, this was about 5 miles from the ocean, so it was a little out of place. Obviously, they were on their way back from the local mountains, but it was just so strange.
* Speaking of strange, we've been having some crazy weather lately. Torrential rains, sunshine, and tornadoes. Gotta love California. I'm thrilled with the rain though; we really need it.
* Steve and his dad have finished the garage, yay! They put up 3 massive shelves, and installed two fluorescent light fixtures. Very nice.
* Owen's top tooth is slowly working its way out of his gums, and he seems to be in pretty good spirits.
* The moms meetup for today has been canceled because of the rain, boo. I'm really happy I found this group, and I'm wondering if I should even bother with the other one. We have a meetup on Thursday, so I guess I'll see how that one goes, and decide from there.

Owen is 7 months old today!
At 7 months, Owen:
* Is still 100% breastfed
* Has tried the following foods - rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, barley cereal, squash, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, carrots, peaches, pears, bananas, applesauce, prunes, turkey, and beef
* Loves eating bananas in his mesh feeder
* Rolls everywhere to get where he needs to go
* Has made some rudimentary attempts at crawling
* Can sit unassisted for a minute or so, but has sat as long as five minutes
* Just cut his third tooth, and it looks like #4 won't be far behind
* Wears a size 3 diaper
* Is finally fitting into his 6-12 month clothes, but can still wear his 3-6 month stuff
* Wakes up once or twice a night, and is then up for the day at around 8:30
* Is starting to be able to put himself back to sleep if he wakes up
* Easily transfers objects between his hands
* Loves to watch the cats
* Loves to watch his Baby Einstein videos
* Loves to roll around on his bear mat
* Loves his activity center
* Can entertain himself for a while in his crib before demanding that we get him out
* Is very well-behaved in public (he always has been)
* Loves his daddy right now. He always get a huge smile on his face when he sees him
* Loves to make this funny clicking sound with his tongue, all the time
* Has starting making these moaning/sighing noises when he's on the boob, like he's trying to talk and eat at the same time
* Sticks out his tongue and makes fake puking noises
* Makes the following sounds - mama, dada, ba, hi, oh, yeah, ooh, doo, fa, juh, boo, aaay (like The Fonz)
And this morning, as a special present for me, he slept in until 11:15! I brought him in bed to eat, then he fell asleep and I put him down on my chest. He kept waking up off and on, but it was soooooo nice to sleep so late. And tomorrow is my day to sleep in too; maybe I won't tell Steve that he slept so late ;).

Today, Owen and I went to my first moms group meeting with
rancid13, and I had a blast! I almost feel silly for being so worried about it. These women were all so nice and welcoming; I had imagined more snobbery and high school involved. I was so happy to be wrong. Owen was very well-behaved, and everyone's babies were adorable. We stopped at Old Navy, and I scored 4 shirts for a whopping $8!
Owen's top tooth finally broke through, and the poor little guy is miserable. He went to sleep before 8 tonight, which is pretty rare. One of the moms at the group said that she gives her kid a pacifier whenever he's teething, so I decided to try that with Owen, and to my surprise, he took it! I hope that offers him some relief. I gave him Tylenol right before bed too, so hopefully that will help him too.

More books and more stuff
Jan. 23rd, 2008 09:01 pm* I was feeling brave today, so I bundled Owen up in his stroller, and we walked to the library and grocery store. It was cool outside, but sunny, so the 15-20 minute walk wasn't too bad. When we left the library, I noticed that some clouds had moved in, and when we left the grocery store, it was really overcast and windy. Later, when I dropped Steve off at work from his lunch break, it was pouring rain.
* Speaking of rain, I LOVE this weather right now. We got a couple of really nice downpours tonight. Unfortunately, I'm going to assume that my other moms group meetup is out, because it's a picnic in the park.
* I finished my 4th book yesterday, and got 5 more today. Here's what I got:
Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
Every Secret Thing by Ann Tatlock
Snow Angel by Jamie Carie
Daniel Isn't Talking by Marti Leimbach
* I also bought the book Light on Snow by Anita Shreve. If anyone has any opinions on any of these books, I'd love to hear them!
* I cannot keep a bandaid on Owen's finger to save my life! He's gone through 4 bandaids since yesterday; they just won't stay on, which makes applying Neosporin much more difficult. I just keep cleaning it, and dabbing some Neosporin on it. I hope that'll do the trick.

Wut thuh phuk?!
Jan. 22nd, 2008 09:22 pm* I recently joined 2 moms groups, and have been nervous about going since I'm so shy. I finally decided to do it today, and when I showed up, no one was there! Granted, I was about 15 minutes late, but I would have to think they still would've been there. It was about an hour roundtrip of driving. That sucked.
* I picked Steve up for lunch today on the way back from said failed meetup. When we came home, Steve's dad was in our house. He's working on building shelves in the garage, and had come in to use the bathroom, but it was a little freaky having someone in our house.
* Owen cut his finger today on our tape measure. We're in the market for a new couch, so we were measuring the room, and Owen grabbed onto the tape measure. He played with it for a minute, and when I took it away from him, I noticed his finger was bleeding. It didn't bother him any, so I just washed it and Steve put a giant bandaid on it.
* I put another bandaid on Owen's finger because he bled through the first one, and he almost swallowed it! We were at the furniture store, and Steve grabbed it just in time.
* We really want to get a sectional couch, but we don't really have the room because our living room isn't wide enough. We went to a furniture store and saw this:

Isn't that funky? It's totally weird, but we love it. We're currently trying to figure out if it will work in our house.
* That's totally weird about Heath Ledger. I wasn't particularly a fan or anything, but he's not one of the ones I'd peg to die young.
* Kellie Pickler was on Ellen today. They played a clip of her on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" and good Lord, was she an idiot. I'm not trying to act like I'm a genius or anything, but it is generally known that Europe is a continent, not a country. Yikes.

Did you know?
Jan. 21st, 2008 12:56 pmDid you know that I don't like country music, but I love line dancing? I used to go every week, probably until I was about 22-23 weeks pregnant. I went again for the last time when I was 35 weeks, and I'm sure I was quite the sight. I'm dying to go back, but the good line dancing night is Thursday (they do mostly couples dancing on the other nights), and Steve works late.
