Holy crap, it’s been a hell of a day! I’ve spent half of it in the emergency room. Most would complain, but hey, I got out of work for 5 hours!

At around 10:30 or so, I got a phone call from my neighbor Eric. Steve and Eric play soccer together, and they had a practice this morning. Eric called and said that they were calling 911 because Steve was hurt. I could hear Steve in the background shouting that he was okay, because he didn’t want me to worry.

Apparently, Steve went to get the ball away from a guy, and when he planted his foot in the ground, it didn’t slide like it was supposed to, and he heard a pop. Never a good sign. He thought he was fine, and was able to walk to the car, but when he sat down, his entire upper body went numb. He couldn’t move his arms, and his speech was really slurred because his tongue had swelled. Luckily, he had asked Eric to follow him, so Eric was right there to help him out. They had two or three guys trying to call 911, and Eric had called me in the meantime to let me know what was going on.

Someone finally got through to 911, and the paramedics were on the scene within a minute. They looked him over and splinted his knee, then asked if he wanted to go to the hospital in the ambulance. I told Eric to tell him no, because it’s so much more expensive. Eric ended up taking Steve to the hospital, and Steve called me on the way there to let me know what was going on. I asked my boss if I could leave, then I transferred my phones to the Mazda dealership, and went down to the hospital.

I got to the emergency room, where I found Steve sitting in a wheelchair, talking to the admitting rep. Eric had gone to the car to get his soccer bag and a change of shoes, since Steve was still wearing his cleats. I thanked Eric for taking care of him, and he said that he would go back to the park later to get Steve’s car and bring it home.

We waited in the emergency room lobby for about 3 hours before we went back into their secondary emergency room. The doctor did some pressure and range of motion tests, and then he went to get his knee x-rayed. The x-ray came back negative, so no broken bones, yay! They put him in an immobilizer and gave him a pair of crutches, then told him to follow up with our regular doctor and get an MRI done to make sure that there was no tendon or ligament damage.

After we left the hospital, I asked Steve what he wanted for lunch, and he said Shakey’s Pizza, so I drove over there with him in the back seat, ordered the pizza, and brought it home, where Steve’s car was sitting in the driveway. I got him settled on the couch, brought out the fan, propped his leg up on some pillows, left him the remote, phone, and some Pepsi, and came back to work. I brought his hospital paperwork with me just in case the boss wanted proof of where I really was, but he was really nice about the whole thing and said that I didn’t need it.

I’m kinda bummed to be back at work, but Steve doesn’t need anyone to wait on him hand and foot, so I couldn’t justify missing the entire day. Besides, our neighbors should be home now after dropping Eric’s mom off at the airport, so they can check on him. They have his car keys too, so they need to stop by anyway to return them.

Thanks! I hope he did, but he's hobbling around (without crutches, grrr), so I think I'm done doing stuff for him ;).

It was a little scary, especially with his upper body going numb, but he's doing just fine today.

OMG, I'm so glad he's ok! I'm really worried about his upper body going numb and his tongue swelling. I'd def call the Dr on Tuesday morning! Have a good holiday weekend, what's left of it at least. You're not working, right???

Thanks! I was really worried about the numbness too, but whenever he told the doctor or nurse about it, they pretty much chalked it up to him panicking about his injury.

You are correct, I'm not working today, first time in 30 days, woo hoo :D!

So what caused the speech slurring & numbness? That is weird! Glad he has no broken bones!

That might have been the heat, because it was super hot outside and he was wearing a long sleeved goalie jersey.

Wow, that's quite a scare you guys had! I'm relieved to hear that nothing was broken/torn, and I agree that you did a fantastic job taking care of him! Yay for Eric too, he really stepped up to the plate and helped out in your absense too. :)
