While we're waiting for the MRI to confirm it, Steve's doctor believes that he has completely torn his LCL, the lateral collateral ligament, in his knee, and that he's going to need surgery. Basically, Steve's sports playing career is over. He's handling the news surprisingly well, but part of me wonders if it's really sunk in with him yet. He's always complained that you start going downhill athletically after 25, so I think he's using that theory to get through this. I feel badly for him, because his entire life has been all about playing sports, and he's not going to know what to do with himself now. I'm sure he'll probably play again, but he seems to think that he's done forever.
Here's a picture of the ligament; you're looking at the outside of the knee (hence the term "lateral"):

As if that wasn't bad enough, he found out at his staff meeting today that the supervisor postion that he's been salivating over will probably not be posted until the union settles whatever bullshit it is that they have going on. That could take up to a year. Stupid union.
