4th of July happenings
Jul. 4th, 2006 09:50 pmI hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July! Ours was, well, interesting. Let me just say that I now understand why fireworks are illegal in some cities.
In the early afternoon, we watched Germany play an awesome game against Italy, only to lose at the very end of the second overtime period. Bummer. I have a friend who is from Italy, and I sent him a nice text message saying that Italy was going to lose. I never heard back from him, and thank God, because I would be eating a huge slice of humble pie.
After the World Cup game, Steve and I headed down to my grandma's house for a barbecue. She got a new kitten, and she's so cute! But she's a total spitfire; hissing and scratching if you get anywhere near her. I found that out the hard way.
At around 7pm, we left my grandma's house and headed home. Here's where the evening goes downhill. We went to Steve's work, which always has a 4th of July fireworks show. We fed some celery to the bunnies that live there, and picked out a nice spot on the grass across the street from the stadium. When the fireworks show started, this little girl, probably around 5 or 6 years old, starts belting out the chorus from "I Believe I Can Fly." She kept singing it over and over, for about 5 minutes, and everyone around her was getting annoyed. Finally, Steve yelled "Please stop singing!" and she stopped for a little while. Thanks for ruining the show for us little girl! And her damn parents didn't do anything about it either. I hate that.
On the way home, we decided to go to the back entrance of our neighborhood. Fireworks are legal in our city, and people put that shit right in the middle of the street so you can't drive down, so we had to go the alternate route. We cut across on one street, and just as Steve had finished telling me that he doesn't want to drive over fireworks because he's afraid it will do something to the car, some asshole throws one right in the middle of the street. It started bouncing wildly and we had no idea where it was going to go. Steve had to slam on the brakes, and we almost skidded into a car. The dumbass, along with 20 of his drunk friends, just stood there looking at us. So aggravating.
And that was our evening. Just lovely. I'm glad we made it home in one piece, though I'm not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. I'm on a temp assignment this week, basically as a receptionist. I was supposed to be in the back, handling the overflow calls, but the front receptionist was on vacation Monday, so I had to cover the front. Luckily, it wasn't too busy, and I'll be in the back for the rest of the week.
